Warning: Mild spoilers.
Fox's Peter Pan and the Pirates has long been one of my favorite cartoons. It was also one of the best versions of Peter Pan I've seen, even though it doesn't center on the main story line, but on the adventures the Darling children have in Neverland with Peter.
My favorite character in the show is Billy Jukes, I love the idea they made one of the pirates a kid. The episode "Billy Jukes, Lost Boy" was easily my favorite. While it was kind of sad, it was also the most touching in the show. While little is revealed about Jukes's backstory, he definitely has a dark past I have read many theories about from fans. Some were believable, some far-fetched, but it sure was cool to see that this character fascinated so many fans. Slightly was also my favorite of the lost boys, and I thought the friendship he formed with Jukes in BJLB was a very powerful moment in the show.
I also love the way the show presented Captain Hook. The spirit of his character was much more deep and loyal to the book than the Disney Hook was. Indeed, Peter Pan was one of the few stories for which I have seen an animation studio outdo Disney. While Hook is still largely a comedic villan, he was not silly in this version. I loved the running gag that he constantly uses big words the kids don't understand.
The pirates in general were, I think, what made this version special. They were presented as individuals with different backgrounds, and they were funny and manage to be endearing even though they are technically villans.
It was also fun to see the characters react to Peter's arrogance and selfishness. He may be their hero, but he has flaws they clearly sometimes want to strangle him for. I liked that Wendy scolded him a lot, even though she clearly has a major crush on him.
I know according to the book Tinkerbell isn't supposed to talk in a way people understand her, but I like that in this version she does. I know it was to make it easier to follow the show, but she also have some really funny lines sometimes. While she was mean to Wendy, her comments were just so funny I had to laugh anyway.
Any other Peter Pan and the Pirates fans out there?
