Watership Down is one of my favorite non-Disney animated movies. While it is somewhat dark, it was well balanced with touching moments and comic relieves.
It think on the whole the movie did the book justice except for a few bits. Pipkin's loyalty to Hazel and his friendship with Fiver didn't show as well as I would have liked, and I didn't like Hyzenthlay panicing when the Efrafan owsla almost caught up with Bigwig and the does when the book made it clear Hyzenthlay wasn't someone who would lose her head. But I did like that she was added to the rabbits who lead the dog to Watership.
Hazel, Bigwig and Fiver were particullarly well presented. I liked how the movie stressed there was some tension between Hazel and Bigwig at first, but then Bigwig gradually learns to appreciate Hazel's leadership skills, and ends up calling him his cheif even after Hazel was made lame from the gunshot.
