I was aware of the name Marlowe. I had the advantage of having lived close to Shakespeare's birthplace (Stratford-On-Avon, Warwickshire) and delved somewhat into his work on a compulsory basis while at school. I found it intriguing, even at the age of 10, that Shakespeare's house and his wife's cottage (Anne Hathaway) are two separate buildings, and that upon his death, he left to Anne his second-best bed. (Go and fact check me. I learned this before the Internet existed.)
We are actually quite lucky to have had his work preserved. The story I've heard, which may contain a grain of truth, is that his works were collected by a friend after his death, and bound into a single volume. Marlowe, and others of that age, may simply have lacked the good fortune to have had their works preserved. Whether Shakespeare was Marlowe, or Marlowe was Shakespeare, or whether they drank in the same tavern is immaterial. Great authors and playwrights are lost to us.
It may be surprising to some that we have been very bad at preserving our past but history, particularly in Europe, has been turbulent and part of the reason authors like Shakespeare are considered important is simply because so little remains.
