Since not all of us grew up in the U.S, I was curious what TV shows aired in our countries of origin that you would like to share.
I live in Israel, and one of my favorite Israeli TV shows is a satirical show calls "The Jews Are Coming." Basically, it's sketches that refer to Biblical stories or events significant in Jewish history, but from a secular, modern day POV and it's so funny. Sadly, some people consider it offensive, but I disagree. I think self irony is a very healthy thing for a society to have.
Another one of my favorites is an Israeli version of "Comedy Store." It aired in the 1990s and features some of the best Israeli comedians of that time. This was also a series of funny sketches, but they were meant for pure entertainment, it was not satirical.
I also liked a show that aired when I was a kid, which literally translates to "The Wonders of Backstage." It was about 3 stage actors and one actress that performed plays of famous stories, but in the process the show also gave a look to what the actors were doing backstage.
Another of my favorites as a kid was a show called "Hugo," which is actually a Danish game, but this was a kids' show on the Israeli children's channel in which kids would call the hosts and play the game via telephone. The games themselves were fun, and the hosts added some entertainment.

Great idea for a thread, Disney! I loved hearing about the shows you mentioned, and your comments are awesome. Sadly, some people consider it offensive, but I disagree. I think self irony is a very healthy thing for a society to have. I totally agree, and applaud you for for making your point so eloquently. Now let's see... I grew up in Sri Lanka, so a lot of the TV shows were tele dramas as they were called. Sometimes these were romances, and other times they were a combination of mystery and romance. They were usually in my native tongue of Sinhala, and used to air once a week for about 3-4 months till the finale, after which a new tele drama would be shown. I don't remember the name, but there was this tele drama where this family moves to a new house, only to encounter a female ghost of a previous tenant who lived there. They find out that she was murdered, and with the ghost's help manage to find the real killer, and crack a murder mystery that was unsolved for like 25 years. I definitely enjoyed this one, as compared to the usual tele dramas that featured a sappy romance and not much else, LOL. Another TV show that I used to watch in Sri Lanka, was this Japanese drama series called Oshin. It was dubbed in English and told the story of a young Japanese girl Oshin, and her life in a small village and how she eventually carves out her own destiny to become a successful business owner in her old age. She embarks on a journey down memory lane with her grandson in tow, and that is how the story starts. It was very sad for the most part, but also very inspirational, since it showed one woman's courageous story to rise above her poverty and make something more out of her life. While not necessarily a Sri Lankan show, it's still an Asian one, so I thought I would include it here. There was also this other series called Bonsior, which was a show that introduced the Sri Lankan public to everything about France, be it food, language, travel, music, etc. It was presented by two popular, young hosts at the time, and my mom and I used to watch it every week. It was interesting to see two Sri Lankan presenters teach us about verb conjugation and such, as well as French food and the like. I also remember having a major crush on the male presenter Kumar, as a teenager, LOL. I think that's it for now. I'll be sure to post more when I do remember other shows I used to watch. Who's next? ~Shaliza

Those shows sound interesting, especially the first one. It's nice to see a ghostly character that actually befriends the family that moves into a haunted house, instead of terrorizing them.

^ Yeah, I agree. It's one of the reasons that I watched that tele drama religiously as opposed to some of the other ones. I was remembering another show I used to watch, called "Kopi Kade" which basically translates into "Coffee Shop." It was a Sri Lankan sitcom of sorts, that revolved around a coffee shop in a small village and all the people who used to frequent it. They would order coffee, tea and other things, and sit around gossip about village happenings. It was pretty witty, and always gave me a good ol' giggle. ~Shaliza

Nice, I like when characters in a show have a gathering place.
I am happy to say that "The Jews Are Coming" is now airing its second season. I watched the first 2 episodes today, and they were so funny. I was worried there would be no second season, partly because the religious sectors opposed and partly because the network is in trouble, but, THEY'RE BAAAAAACK!!!!!
