Ludwig van Beethoven - Fidelio, sung in German. Libretto by Joseph Sonnleithner, based on a French work by Jean-Nicholas Bouilly, with additional work by Georg Friedrich Treitschke.
Philips CD 426 308-2 (West German copy). Recorded Dresden November 1989.
The opera is a rescue drama. The hero is imprisoned by his rival and his wife disguises herself as a man in order to effect his rescue. Opera is not known for the subtlety of its plot lines. Best to just enjoy the music and not worry too much about what the characters are getting up to.
Beethoven's only opera, Fidelio was first performed in 1805 and is an opera in 2 acts, lasting around 2¼ hours. It received subsequent reworking by the composer and its third and finalized iteration premiered in 1814.
I was going to listen to Eugene Onegin, but I've changed my mind.
The next piece stretches the meaning of the term "opera" but probably qualifies. It tells a story, and not a particularly deep and meaningful one, as is true of most operas. The main difference, apart from the fact that it is the work of a modern rock band, is the fact that the vocalist takes all of the dialogue.
The work is called "The Astonishing" and is performed by Dream Theater, the inventors of the genre "progressive metal". It's not an easy listen, at two hours, but then again, what opera is? It tells the story of a future dystopian society in which music has been effectively killed off and replaced by a computer generated noise.
If The Who's "Tommy" qualifies as "rock opera", then so does The Astonishing.
The musicianship is superb. Jordan Rudess has been voted the best keyboard player in any genre of all time, and the rest of the band are right up there in terms of musical ability.
It's a strange recording. If you buy it and like it, there's every possibility that buying the rest of the Dream Theater discography will leave you disappointed. On the other hand, you might hate it, and yet find that their other recordings are right up your street. Me, I love all of their stuff.

Keecha1996: Hello, just popping in to see that everyone is well. I was working on coloring cards for adults, they have detailed butterflies, and flowers. After I have colored them? Then I add sparkly glitter glue to make the colors pop.
