I know what you mean, disneyhead . My partner at work saw it and felt that it was just another, Kung-Fu movie. It was the music and Mushu which made the animated film so memorable, I think. It's sad that they decided against these in the live action version. I will see it at some point, but I'm not in any hurry, LOL.

Honestly, it could have been any Mulan movie. I probably wouldn't have recognized it as based on the animated if not for the very short bits of background music. The romance wasn't that believable probably because they spent more time with the fighting aspect over the character development. So many characters missing that gave the movie its color. Even if they had only left in the grandmother, it would have helped in the comedy department. I originally thought perhaps they were going more for realism by taking out the musical numbers and some of the more fantastical characters like Mushu and Cri-Kee, but they added a phoenix and a woman with dark magic, so I don't really see why they felt the need to change well-loved characters.
Another thing I wasn't that fond of them changing was making it seem like she had all this great acrobatic/warrior talent as a child. I thought the animated did better in showing it was perseverance and determination as well as using wit over brawn that made her into a warrior, not some innate "superwoman" talent that was suppressed. While some of that was also included, it was overshadowed though certainly talent plays its part. I suppose it's me being nitpicky , but I felt the animated move actually made her journey more realistic in that she didn't just fight better when physically outmatched, she fought smarter and that was her true advantage.
The magic of the animated was very much the music and comedy as well the heart in the relationships . Take that out and you're left with a very forgettable action movie in my opinion. They did show a nice bond between father and daughter, which is about all I can say for it beyond the visuals. Not their worst live action to date but definitely near the bottom.

SkyFire 🐺: Had a reply from her. She has the money from her former employer, but still doing battle for the unemployment money. Also doing battle with depression and hoping to be in soon.
