Since we have a thread here for "Mary Poppins Returns," it did not seem right to me that there was no thread to discuss the original.
This is one of my favorite live-action Disney movies, and one of my favorite fantasy movies altogether. The acting was great, especially Julie Andrews, and the songs were beautiful. My personal favorite was "Feed the Birds." The comedy was great too. My husband and I still crack up at the comment, "Feed the birds and have you got? Fat birds."
I also loved the combination of live-action and animation sequences, and the special effects. They seem simple by today's standards, but I think that's for the better, it preserves a classic and simple technique.
The story itself was also very touching, and I think it sends a powerful message to have Mary Poppins help the children strengthen their bond with their father rather than focus on her relationship with them.

Thanks for starting up a thread for this, disneyhead!
The original Mary Poppins is one of my favorite Disney movies too. Julie Andrews is just magical in the role and I love her.
I also love the message that Mary Poppins was sent to help the Banks children develop a stronger bond with their parents, and father in particular. That being said, I'm always sad when Mary has to leave at the end of the movie.
The songs are great too, and my favorite is "A Spoonful of Sugar."
